Community Music Model

The Brass of the Saff is a unique inner city youth brass band which was planned as a partnership project between a local primary school and a local brass band.

Drum and Brass ran weekly band sessions at Marriot Primary School and encouraged communication between the expert players at the nearest brass band: Southfields Concert Brass, and parents of the young players. Brass Bands England helped with planning and fundraising and instruments were bought through a successful crowdfunding campaign (see our impact report here). The band has a reputation for innovative ideas. It has it’s own player development system combining in-house badges, nationally accredited arts awards and ABRSM Music Medals. It is truly a community-led project. Local volunteers run the band with background support from Drum and Brass. It is a model for the future of brass bands that focuses on developing new players and community identity through music.
